When It’s Not a Good Idea

In some instances, men may have a pre-existing condition that may make them think twice about having testosterone therapy — or at least consult with an expert before starting it.

Here are five conditions that should make you think twice about testosterone therapy. While they don’t necessarily exclude you from its benefits, if you have one of these five conditions you should consult your doctor first.

Men Who Are Morbidly Obese

Men who are seriously overweight frequently have low testosterone. But it’s usually a good idea to try and lose some weight before starting the therapy.

There are health risks involved with being morbidly obese, including the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and other serious medical issues.

Men with Polycythemia

Polycythemia is a condition in which you have too many red blood cells. Testosterone therapy can stimulate red blood cell production. So it’s a good idea to get this condition under control before you begin testosterone therapy.

Sleep Apnea

If you have sleep apnea, this condition could be worsened when you start testosterone therapy.

Sleep apnea is when there are brief but frequent periods of interrupted breathing while sleeping. It’s often accompanied by loud snoring. So if you’re not sure if you have it, ask your partner.

Prostate Disease

Severa urinary tract symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate could be a sign that you should avoid or delay testosterone therapy.

Testosterone can cause your prostate to grow. So if you already have an enlarged prostate, it’s not a good idea to make it even bigger. Instead, discuss treatment options with your doctor first.

Prostate Cancer

Testosterone therapy does not cause prostate cancer. But if you have this condition, you need to treat it before having testosterone therapy.
